What is Clothing Recycling?

Clothing recycling represents an area of opportunity that is just ripening. Currently, 85% of used clothing end up in landfills, amounting to 81 discarded pounds per person and an astounding 17 BILLION POUNDS overall! However, most of these discarded items can easily be recycled by selling them on the second-hand market, breaking them down for industrial use, or repurposing them altogether to make new clothing and shoes.

GreenMatters.com explains the general process of how fabrics get recycled. They are sorted by type (clothing, linens, towels, etc.), by fabric (natural vs. synthetic), and by color (in case re-dyeing is necessary). The sorted clothing are then shredded or pulled into yarn fibers that are cleaned, processed, and re-spun by knitting or weaving. Damaged or degraded fibers that cannot be spun is compressed into filling for insulation or mattresses. Polyester-based clothing can be granulated into polyester chips and melted into new polyester fibers.
